Ingredient Notes
All it takes to make a fresh healthy homemade hummus recipe is 7 simple ingredients. Some you likely already have on hand, and anything else you can pick on a quick trip to the grocery store.
- Chickpeas: They're also called garbanzo beans in some locations. We prefer using canned for ease and consistency.
- Lemon juice: Use fresh lemon juice for the best flavor.
- Tahini: This thick paste made from sesame seeds gives hummus its unique flavor. You can find it in most grocery stores on the aisle with oils, condiments, or maybe nut butter.
- Garlic: For best results, we prefer the flavor of fresh garlic clove in hummus.
- Extra-Virgin Olive oil: This healthy oil is the best option for making hummus.
- Aquafaba: This is the liquid in the can of beans or cooking liquid, just in case you made them from dry chickpeas. It replaces some of the oil needed to thin out the hummus to make it deliciously creamy. The results are a healthy hummus recipe you will feel good about serving.

Substitutions and Variations
- Aquafaba: You can also use plain water instead. The aquafaba (chickpea liquid) lends a bit more chickpea flavor to your hummus.
- Canned chickpeas: If you prefer to cook dried chickpeas, you can use three cups of them to make this hummus blender recipe. It's important to make sure they are plenty tender so they will turn out creamy when blended.
- For different flavors of your hummus, add roasted red pepper, pesto, or sundried tomatoes.
- Adjust any of the spices for a different combination. One teaspoon of ground cumin may or may not be enough for you. We love ours topped with a sprinkle of paprika.
- Make a spicy hummus by mixing in some chopped jalapenos, cayenne pepper, or a bit of your favorite salsa.
- Roasted garlic: If you prefer a more mellow garlic flavor, try using roasted garlic instead.
How To Make Blender Hummus
Store-bought is good, but Homemade Hummus is even better!! It's so fresh and creamy you'll be hooked on this homemade version the first time you make it.
- Rinse and drain the chickpeas. Reserve at least a third cup of bean liquid, also called aquafaba, to use for thinning out your hummus. You can also use water.
- Place all the ingredients in a high-speed blender and insert the tamper in the top.
Process the hummus mixture until smooth. This usually takes about 30 seconds but could increase to a minute if you prefer a creamier texture. Sample the hummus and adjust the seasoning to your taste.
PRO TIP: Use the tamper to push the hummus into the blades as you mix so that it will blend up creamier. Feel free to add more liquid if you like a thinner consistency.
- Place the blender hummus in a serving bowl and drizzle with additional olive oil. Sprinkle the top with paprika or sumac and chopped parsley. Eat and enjoy!
What to Serve With Hummus
- Hummus is usually served as a dip. It goes great with pita chips, cucumber, corn chips, tortilla chips, crackers, fresh veggie sticks such as carrots, zucchini, and celery, or with sliced fresh pita bread or naan bread.
- Use it on a Mediterranean platter along with feta cheese, roasted red peppers, and olives.
- Add Vitamix hummus to a charcuterie board for a healthy option for guests who might be watching what they're eating and need a great healthy snack.
- Spread it on a sandwich or wrap!
- Use it on toast for a healthy breakfast toast.
PRO TIP: Serve your simple hummus recipe topped with pine nuts to add a little texture and taste.
Expert Tips
- Remember to reserve a little of the liquid from the can of chickpeas because that's what makes this the creamiest hummus.
- Making hummus in a blender is great as long as it's high-powered. We use a Vitamix, and it turns out great.
- Removing the outer skin of the chickpeas will make the hummus really creamy, but we often skip this extra step, and it turns out wonderful!
- Fresh is best. Fresh lemon and garlic really make this recipe zesty and delicious.
- How to store hummus: Fresh Homemade Hummus will keep for up to a week in an airtight container in the fridge. It can also be frozen in a freezer-safe container for up to three months.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can, but the tahini is usually a part of an authentic hummus recipe. It will definitely taste a little different, and you will likely need to add a bit more oil to give it the right consistency.
The trick to making blender hummus is using a high-powered blender such as a Vitamix. The consistency is pretty thick, so the hummus needs the force of this type of blender to turn out creamy. Adding more liquid or stirring the ingredients around are two ways to improve the blending of your hummus.
Yes, that works too! Place all the ingredients in the processor and blend until smooth. Make sure to scrape down the sides at least once.

It is! I'm so glad someone else feels the same way. What's your favorite kind to make?

I have never made hummus at home. I know that sounds crazy, my daughter loves it and we always have it in the fridge but we've never made it ourselves. I have been seeing so many great recipes with chickpeas and they have so many healthy attributes I really need to get on the Chickpea bandwagon. An easy way to start would be with your hummus. Thanks for sharing your recipe and your techniques I am definitely going to try this.

I bough hummus for years, not realizing how easy it is to make and how much better it tastes! I love that I can customize the flavor too! Roasted red pepper is one of my favs!

I've never tried making hummus but you make it sound so easy and delicious. Please help though, I have no idea what tahini is? Sorry if it's a silly question, but I'm not a very clever cook and all your recipes sound so yummy, I'd really like to try them out.
Horace Williams Jr
I agree. I have no idea what tahini is or where to find it and I love hummus! Please help. Thanks for sharing this easy recipe!
Erin
Good question, Horace! It's a sesame paste. It's easy to purchase here in the NW, so hopefully it is where you are too 🙂 Trader Joe's has a great one if there is one of those near you.
Erin
It's so easy and tasty! Tahini is a sesame seed paste. They sell it at Trader Joe's and most grocery stores in the specialty section. You can make your own, but that would take too long 🙂
