Ingredient Notes
*See the bottom of the post for the recipe card with measurements and full instructions.
- All-purpose flour - make sure to scoop out the flour into the measuring cup with a spoon and then level it with a knife.
- Baking soda - since this is your evening agent, make sure it's fresh baking soda.
- Salt
- Salted butter - we find this recipe is great with salted or unsalted butter, so use what you have on hand.
- White granulated sugar
- Light brown sugar - make sure to pack it tightly in your measuring cup.
- Pure vanilla extract
- Large eggs - room temperature eggs are best.
- Chocolate chips - regular size or mini work well in the recipe. You could also use dark chocolate or white chocolate chips.
- Oreo cookies - of course, you need the classic cookie to stuff inside the cookies! For reference, we use Double Stuffed Oreos in this recipe. Why not experiment with other flavors of Oreos like chocolate, peanut butter, or whatever is available seasonally? You’ll only regret that you didn’t think of this sooner!!
What type of Oreo is best for stuffed cookies?
It's true. Using regular Oreos for this Oreo-stuffed cookie works great. However, if you love the creme filling, they are double good with Double Stuffed Oreos!
You can even try seasonal or your favorite Oreo cookie in this recipe:
- Birthday Cake Oreos
- Salted Caramel Oreos
- Chocolate Oreos
- Peanut Butter Oreos

- Oreo Fudge - this 3-ingredient recipe is one of our most popular. So easy, yet so tasty!

- Oreo Pumpkin Cookie Pops - these little darlings are on repeat when fall rolls around! Serve them at your harvest party or a Halloween get-together, or use them as a fun project for kids on Thanksgiving.

- Bunny Oreo Cookie Pops - an Oreo treat that's too cute not to make!
Step-By-Step Instructions
Gather your ingredients and, if necessary, line your baking pan with parchment paper. Now, preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Step 1 - Make Cookie Dough. Combine all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl and set aside. In a stand mixer or with a handheld mixer, in a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugars. Beat softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until nice and creamy - about 2 minutes.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Once you add the eggs and vanilla, gradually add in the flour mixture and mix until combined.
Next, stir in semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Step 2 - Refrigerate Dough. Refrigerate your chocolate chip cookie dough for 10-15 minutes.
Step 3 - Place Cookie Dough Around Oreo. Take a large scoopful of cookie dough and form it around the Oreo cookie with your hands. Place more dough on top of the Oreo Cookie than below. Completely enclose Oreo in the cookie dough.
Step - 4 - Bake. Place on a cookie sheet (we prefer ours lined with a Silpat Baking Mat). Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Oven Temperatures may vary, so watch your cookies as they may need additional cooking time.
Because the cookies are so large, we place fewer cookies on the baking sheet as they tend to spread.
Baking Tip: slightly under-baking cookies will give them a chewier consistency. Baking longer makes them crispier.
Step 5 - Cool. Cool your stuffed chocolate chip cookies on the cookie sheet for 2 minutes. Then, let them cool completely by transferring to a cooling rack.
How to stuff Oreo cookies inside the cookie dough
For the Oreo stuffing part, you can try a couple of techniques.
- We like taking a scoop of cookie dough, placing it on top of the cookie and a smaller one underneath, and then forming the dough around the Oreo cookies with our hands.
- Other recipes say to place a scoop of cookie dough on top and one on the bottom of the Oreo, then shape it with your hands. We find this creates odd-shaped cookies once you bake them. There was so much dough; it just spread way too much.
How to store
Once cooled completely, store your Oreo stuffed cookies in an airtight container on the counter for about one week.
Pro Tip
If you want to prevent cookies from hardening, store them in a sealed cookie jar with a slice of apple.
How to freeze
These Oreo Stuffed Cookies freeze well.
For best results, place cooked and cooled cookies on a cookie sheet and place them in the freezer to freeze individually. Once frozen, put them in an airtight container and label them with contents and date.
Using our tips on freezing food to prevent freezer burn will keep eight weeks in the freezer. Take them out of the freezer to let them defrost before you eat them.
You can also freeze the dough for up to 3 months, thaw it, and then bake it.
Pro Tip
You can also warm them in the microwave for about 10 seconds to give them a fresh-baked flavor.
The secret to baking perfect cookies
Wanna know the secret to cookies with perfectly crisp outer edges and soft, chewy middles? It's very simple, and we NEVER bake cookies without it. It's the Silpat Baking Mat.
Here are the reasons why:
- It turns your regular oven into a professional baking superstar. Seriously, it's incredible how well recipes cook or bake with this little mat!
- It's non-stick, so there is no need to use parchment paper, which helps the environment.
- The mat works for both sweet and savory recipes! We love it!
Expert Tips
- BUTTER: Use real butter, not margarine, in your Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies for best results.
- READER TIP: Readers mentioned using mini chocolate chips, which tend to make placing the cookie dough around the cookies easier. We always use regular-size chocolate chips.
- CHILL DOUGH: Make sure you chill your dough in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes before baking.
- Do NOT grease your baking pan.
- FILLING YOUR BAKING PAN: These large Oreo Cookie cookies tend to expand a lot, so make sure you give them plenty of room on your cookie sheet!
- Definitely wrap the entire Oreo, even if you think it will meltdown to cover them.
- STORE-BOUGHT DOUGH: You can use store-bought cookie dough if you'd like.

Spread way too much and seem too buttery.

We've never had that issue, Morgan. Sorry it didn't work out for you.
Sara Di Stasi
Do you think these will freeze well?
Erin Henry
Most cookies freeze well as long as they are stored properly. We think these would be fine in the freezer for up to 3 months.
sabreelyn
How can I make them less sticky? I make them once and when I balled the dough around the oreo it was a MESS.
Erin Henry
Good question. I would try putting the batter in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to harden slightly.
Damien Farquad
I made these and almost burned down my house. But I have no regrets these are so good!
Monica
How many cookies does this recipe make?

Hi Monica, depending on how big you make them, this recipe produces about 24 stuffed cookies.

Hi! Did you use unsalted or salted butter?
Thanks 🙂

Erin
I used salted, Brianne, because that's what I had on hand. You could use unsalted as well, if that's what you prefer.

I have a silpat and you are so right about them! A true must have for bakers! I actually have two now and want a third! They last forever but I like having more than one for when I bake big batches of holiday cookies.
Erin
Totally smart, Erin! I want another one. I was thinking one Silpat for sweets and one for savories, but I like your idea about having more than more to bake all the holiday cookies...so three is a good number 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
