Tips for Success
- Coloring Your Bath Salts: The food coloring to create the colored layers is optional, so leave it out if you have any concerns.
- Yield: This recipe makes about 3 cups. Depending on how you plan on using or gifting it, you can divide it into three containers or keep it in one.
- Reader Tips: Angel, one of my readers,, has a great idea: Use Pink Himalayan Salt instead of food coloring. Brilliant! Another reader suggests adding red (or whatever color) sprinkles for a festive touch!
Is It Okay to Use Peppermint in Your Bath Products?
Yes, it is absolutely okay to use peppermint in bath products like bath salts.
The Peppermint essential oil used in Peppermint Bath Salts is often found to eliminate harmful bacteria, relieve muscle spasms, disinfect and soothe inflamed skin, as well as release muscle tension. It's also great for headaches and clearing your sinuses.
What Are the Benefits of Using Bath Salts?
Bath salts have multiple benefits. They can be deeply relaxing, therapeutic, and restorative for the soul, as well as providing relief from tension and stress.
The salts can also draw impurities from your skin to help with detoxification.
How to Use Baths Salts
For best results, fill your tub with water and then take a handful or two of bath salts (½ - 1 cup) and pour them into the bathwater by holding your hand under the running faucet.
This allows your bath salts to fall with the water into the tub and release their fragrance to gain the full aromatherapeutic effect.
How to Make Bath Salts for Gifts
Most of my friends received a pretty little jar of these salts for Christmas, but they are good year-round when you need a relaxing and refreshing bath. This recipe is all-natural {minus the food coloring}, so it should be used fairly soon after making it.
These cute little jars are from Michael's, but we have seen ones at Target as well. You could also use these mason jars. Any of these would work well for gifts.

Deb
Hi. I am a start-up gift basketeer. The bath salts and sugar scrubs sound great and I can't wait to try out the recipes. I would like to include them in gift baskets I sell. What advice do you have regarding any steps I should take before selling these items?
Erin
I would make sure your customers know how to use them and their shelf life. I have a sugar scrub book you can find here: https://www.amazon.com/Simple-Homemade-Sugar-Scrubs-Exfoliate-ebook/dp/B075ZJ3PQ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537208127&sr=8-1&keywords=sugar+scrubs+erin+henry
It has all the information you need to make and store as well as their benefits.
Annette
I’m wondering how much does one batch make?
Erin
Hi Annette, this recipe makes about 3 cups of finished product, so I put it in 3 one-cup jars. However, you could put all of it in one or divide it up. Enjoy!
Lori
I was excited to try this out! I just made some intending it to be part of a Valentines gift. Unfortunately the red food colouring for some reason turned black!! I'm fairly disappointed, as the red in the photos looks so cute, but I hope it still works nevertheless.
Any suggestions on brand(s) that may prevent this problem? I assume the colouring I bought is no good.
Thanks!
Erin
Oh, no, Lori! I've never seen that happen. For this recipe, I used a basic gel food coloring. I also like this vegetable based food coloring http://amzn.to/2ESoRzM.
Cris byrd
I made this and i think the food coloring made it to hard. Any suggestions on how to keep it soft?
Erin
Since these are bath salts, they stay on the drier side. They dissolve when added to water in the bath.
jennifer
Hello! Any chance of getting printable labels for the peppermint bath salts? I would greatly appreciate it.
Erin
I'll add that to my list next year, Jennifer! It's a great idea!
Amalia
Is there any chance that the food coloring will stain the tub?
Erin
Good question, Amalla. I have never had an issue, it washed right down. However, just to be safe, I would test a small section in your tub to be sure. Also, the food coloring isn't necessary, so you could always leave it out.
Mary Jernigan
How much do you use at a time? 1 tsp? 1/2 cup??
Erin
Great question, Mary. Depending on how big and how deep you fill your tub, 1/2 - 1 cup would do the trick! Enjoy your DIY! Cheers.
Jelica

Erin, I take a hot bath every night and I love to add a bath bomb or bath salts. I have APS and my legs take the brunt of it, so a hot bath helps with the pain and the salts help with muscle ache and detox. This is the perfect recipe for a perfect bath!
