- Mixing Bowl and Spoon
Ingredients
- 1 cup of sugar
- ½ cup oil (almond, olive oil, or coconut work best)
- ½ teaspoon vitamin E oil (optional, but it helps act as a natural preservative for your scrub and provides a little extra softening)
- 15 drops lemon essential oil
- 1-2 drops red food coloring (optional if you want the pink color)
The lemon essential oil gives this scrub such a wonderful and clean lemon scent. Everyone wants this recipe as a gift!
Tip: to get the most therapeutic benefit from your coconut oil, I recommend using non-fractionated coconut oil (the solid, non-liquid variety.)
How to Make A Sugar Scrub
- Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix. You can add more or less oil to your liking. You may need to soften the coconut oil so it's easy to mix.

See the recipe card for a video tutorial.
How to Use Your DIY Sugar Scrub
- Scoop a small amount of the Pink Lemonade Sugar Scrub into your hands with a spoon. (I recommend using a spoon to keep your scrub clean to increase its shelf life.)
- Scrub all over your hands or feet in a circular motion or wherever you’d like a little extra softness.
- Allow your scrub to sit on your skin for 3-4 minutes. Enjoy this time to rest and relax.
- Rinse well, and then pat dry with a soft towel.
How to Store
The best way to store your Lemonade sugar Scrub is in an airtight container. We prefer glass containers so nothing harmful leaches into your scrub. If you store it in a clean, dry place, It will last about 3 months.
Also, make sure your hands are clean if dipping into your scrub directly. Or better yet, use a clean spoon.

Sugar Scrub FAQs
Since this scrub is used on your body, I recommend using organic sugar. It can be granulated white sugar or brown sugar.
If kept free of contaminates and stored in a clean, dry place, your scrub will last up to three months.
I like to use coconut oil, but olive oil or almond oil are also good choices for making sugar scrubs.

These recipes are so simple and awesome, and I look forward to trying them all, but could a preservative be added to the recipes and if so, how much would you recommend?
Erin Henry
We like our sugar scrubs to be all-natural, so we add vitamin E, which acts as a natural preservative.
Emma
What type of sugar would you advise me to use? (And could this be used in other sugar scrubs? Unless stated otherwise)
Erin Henry
We used organic white sugar in this recipe. It can be used on your body or face if you do a test spot first.
Brionna
Hi do you use the solid or liquid coconut oil?
Erin Henry
We prefer using solid coconut oil and melting it a bit to mix the recipe because it has more therapeutic benefits than liquid. However, if you only have liquid coconut oil, you can use it.

Such a great Mothers' Day gift idea and it's so easy to make. Just an FYI - I used olive oil, because it's what I had at home, and it took about triple the amount of Lemon essential oil to get it to smell even a teeny bit lemony. Next time, I think I'll try the coconut oil!
Erin Henry
We can see how using olive oil might make it smell less like lemon. Good idea adding a bit more lemon essential oil. Glad you love the recipe!
tabytha
Was the coconut oil fractionated?
Erin Henry
We like to use unfractionated coconut oil because it retains its therapeutic benefits. We just soften it before mixing all the ingredients.
Abby K
I was wondering if you could tell me where you got the container you used in the photos. I am making these for Christmas and yours looks so pretty.
Erin Henry
Thanks, Abby! You can use something like this: https://amzn.to/36j1gFV. Or sometimes I find them at Michaels.
Zoe
Hey, looking at trying this recipe. Do I need to use the Vitamin E oil? Would there be any cons to not using it? Or any pros to using it?
Thank you!
Erin Henry
HI Zoe, you don't have to use the vitamin E. It just acts as a natural preservative so your scrub doesn't go bad as fast.
Lydia
Can I put real honey to prevent bacteria for growing?
Erin Henry
Hi Lydia, while we haven't tried using Honey as an antibacterial, it will likely work! Let us know how it goes!
Alex
Thanks for the awesome post! Random question but can you please tell me what the font "Pink Lemonade" is? Thank you!
Erin Henry
Thanks for stopping by, Alex. The font is "Sugar Plum".
