How to Serve Strawberry Shortcake Parfaits
So many recipes and sweet treats are perfect for fresh strawberries. This Strawberry Shortcake in a mason jar is one of our favorites, and it’s also one of the easiest. In addition, it makes a beautiful presentation.
We like to serve our shortcake in these half-pint mason jars. These jars are a perfect size.
Step By Step Instructions
Before you start, reserve a few strawberries for a garnish. This is optional but adds a little something extra to your finished dessert.
Step 1 - Cut Up Strawberries
Now, wash and dry all the strawberries. Then, remove stems and chop them into quarters.
Step 2 - Add Sugar to Berries
Place strawberries in a medium bowl and mix 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar with them. Allow the berries to sit for at least 30 minutes, which will soften them and create a sweet syrup.
Erin's Tip: You can leave the strawberries on the counter or refrigerate them while waiting.
Step 3 - Cut Cake
Next, cut your cake into 1-inch cubes.
Step 4 - Make Whipped Cream
It's time to make your whipped cream. Combine heavy cream, 1 tablespoon sugar, and vanilla. Whip until stiff peaks form.
Tip: The cream whips faster if you start with a chilled bowl.
Step 5 - Assemble Dessert
In each jar, layer cake, strawberries, and whipped cream; repeat these layers and end with whipped cream.
Finally, garnish with fresh strawberries if desired.
Enjoy!

After putting the sugar on the strawberries, do we need to let it sit in the refrigerator or leave them out ?
Erin Henry
It depends, they will be fine left out if you're going to use them shortly afterward. If it will be a while, refrigerate them.
Kris
I love this recipe. Do you know how long these will keep in the jar and if it has to be refrigerated?
Erin
Good questions, Kris. They are best served after you make them so they don't get too soggy, but I think they could be kept in the refrigerator for a couple hours.
Rebecca

Fresh picked berries are the best! But you'll enjoy this with fresh or store bought strawberries. Enjoy!
