Ingredients for Valentine Bark
We like the taste of white chocolate but feel it's enhanced in this recipe by adding a thin layer of milk chocolate underneath to form the two-layer bark.

- Chocolate Candy Melts - we like Ghirardelli dark chocolate melting wafers.
- White Candy Melts - again, we like Ghirardelli white melting wafers.
- Valentine’s themed candy and sprinkles.
- Red or Pink Candy Melts - these are optional if you want to swirl some color into your bark.
For the best chocolate bark, you should use good-quality ingredients.
Ghirardelli Melting Wafers are a great happy medium between chocolate chips that may have additives so that melting can be problematic and high-quality chocolate bars that can be expensive.
How To Make Chocolate for Valentine’s Day
Prep: Line a 9x12 baking sheet with aluminum foil and set it aside.
Step 1 - MELT SEMI-SWEET/DARK CHOCOLATE
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt your semi-sweet chocolate according to the package instructions. We do this at 50% power in the microwave in a glass bowl, stirring between 30-second intervals, and it works perfectly.
A double-boiler also works to melt your chocolate.
Now, pour it into your prepared pan and spread it around with a spoon or spatula.
Place it in the refrigerator to harden slightly while preparing your white chocolate. It does not need to be completely firm.
Step 2 - MELT WHITE CHOCOLATE
Then, melt your white chocolate with whatever method you use to melt your dark chocolate. (Stovetop in a double boiler or microwave.)
Now, pour and spread the white chocolate over your chilled dark chocolate.
STEP 3 - MELT RED OR PINK CHOCOLATE MELTS
NOTE: This optional step adds a little festive color to your finished bark.
Next, melt your colored chocolate with whatever method you use to melt your dark chocolate. (Stovetop in a double boiler or microwave.)
Place dollops of pink or red chocolate over the white chocolate and swirl it around with the tip of a butter knife or toothpick into a fun pattern.
Step 4 - ADD YOUR CANDY AND SPRINKLES
Add your candy and sprinkles to the top of your bark; make sure they are evenly disturbed. Now, press them in slightly to make sure they are secure in the chocolate.
Step 4 - LET HARDEN
Let the bark harden for a 30-minutes to 2 hours. We like to place it in the refrigerator to speed up the process.
Break your bark into pieces, or cut it with a knife for more even pieces.
Enjoy!

Expert Tips
- Chocolate: Because they contain additives, chocolate chips aren’t the best choice for melting and using in this recipe. Try candy melts, melting wafers, or high-quality chocolate bars.
- Timing: Work quickly to place your candies and sprinkles on your chocolate Valentine's Day Bark once you spread the white chocolate in the pan—it hardens quickly.
Recipe FAQs
Once the chocolate is set and broken into pieces, you can store chocolate bark in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for a couple of weeks. We often keep ours in the refrigerator.
Once your chocolate bark is set and broken into pieces, place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet (or reuse your foil-lined sheet) and let it freeze solid—this takes about 1 hour. Then, put it in an airtight freezer container and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
When ready to eat, take it out of the freezer and let it thaw.
