Why This Recipe Works
- It's easy to whip together with pantry staples and a cookie cutter! Kids can even help!
- Soft, chewy texture. The Rice Krispie Treats turn out irresistibly soft, flavorful, and delicious.
- You can make them ahead, so your party or celebration is simple and easy.
Ingredient Notes
Here are the simple ingredients you'll need to make your heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats.
- Butter - we like to use regular salted butter.
- Mini Marshmallows - Mini marshmallows tend to melt down easier than the regular size, so there's less risk of burning.
- Rice Krispie Cereal - yep, you know, the classic cereal found in the breakfast aisle!
- Vanilla Extract - pure vanilla extract gives this recipe something a little extra and depth of flavor!
- Melting Wafers - we like to use white melting wafers and then add natural food coloring to make them pink and red when decorating our cut-out treats.
- Festive Valentine’s Day Sprinkles - think red, white, or pink. Better yet, add some hearts!
Because we're cutting out shapes from our treats, we like to use a 9" x 13" pan. If you prefer thicker treats, use a 9" x 9" baking pan.

This is a nice set of heart-shaped cookie cutters for this recipe or to have on hand for other projects.
Step-By-Step Instructions
- PREP - line a 9” x 13” pan with parchment paper. Make sure to leave a ½ inch overhang, so removing them is easy.
- MEASURE - measure all your ingredients first because the recipe comes together quickly.
- MELT BUTTER & MARSHMALLOWS - melt the butter over medium-low heat in a large pot. Add the marshmallows, continually stirring, just until the marshmallows are melted. If using vanilla extract, add it to the mixture after melting the marshmallows.
- ADD RICE KRISPIES - remove from heat and add the Rice Krispies cereal. Quickly but gently fold the mixture to coat it evenly.
- PLACE IN PAN - spread the mixture into your prepared baking pan. Using a spatula that’s been coated with non-stick cooking spray, gently press and spread the mixture evenly to all corners of the pan. Let the mixture sit for 30-60 minutes to harden before making hearts.
- CUT INTO HEART SHAPE - remove the Rice Krispies Treats from the pan using parchment paper. Use your heart-shaped cookie cutter sprayed with non-stick cooking spray to cut out as many hearts as possible.
- DECORATE - melt your chocolate per the package instructions or in the microwave at 30-second intervals until smooth. Then, dip, drizzle, or frost each heart and while the chocolate is still warm, top with sprinkles.
- ENJOY!
Expert Tips & Tricks
- Use fresh, good-quality marshmallows. If your marshmallows are old, they may not melt as well in this recipe.
- Spray your spatula with non-stick spray, so pressing the treats down in the pan is easy.
- Using pure vanilla extract elevates your recipe and brings all the flavors together. However, it’s optional if you don’t have any on hand.
- Cook marshmallows over medium-low heat. If you cook the recipe over high heat, there is a good chance the sugar will crystalize, turning your Valentine treats hard.
- Gently fold the Rice Krispie Cereal into marshmallows. The cereal is delicate and, if mixed harshly, gets crushed.
- Gently spread the finished mixture in the pan. Don't press it down so hard you crush it.
- If you want to insert a lollipop stick in your heart-shaped treat, little kids can munch on them without getting their hands sticky.
Valentine's Day Rice Krispie Treats Decorating Options
You have a few options if you want a bit of chocolate with the Rice Krispie Treats. Trust us. You do!
DIP - for chocolate-dipped, melt your chocolate in a bowl and dip all or part of your Rice Krispie hearts into the chocolate.
SPREAD - use chocolate, like it's frosting, and spread it on top of the heart.
DRIZZLE - fill a small zippered plastic baggie with melted chocolate, snip the end off, and use it to drizzle chocolate in a fun pattern on your Valentine's Day treats.
While still soft, place a few sprinkles or other candy on your creation.
Pro Tip: You can even top them with a few M&Ms, so they're extra good!
Storing
How do you store Valentine's Day Rice Krispie Treats? Simple. You can keep your Valentine's Day Rice Krispies treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Refrigerate them if you want to keep them longer, but they tend to harden a bit if kept in the fridge.
Pro Tip: When storing, put a layer of parchment paper between them so they don't stick together.
