Wash and dry your apples and strawberries. Then, core and cut your apples into quarters. Slice your strawberries into think strips.
Carefully cut a mouth shape in the center of a quarter of an apple. If you happen to go all the way through to the other side, that’s fine. The peanut butter usually covers it up.
Smear peanut butter on the inside of the cut apple (top and bottom). This doesn't have to be a thick layer, just enough to cover both sides.
Place your strawberry tongue in the bottom center of the apple mouth. Then, push the sunflower seeds into the peanut butter and apple just hard enough to stay put. Now, take a dab of peanut butter and put it on the back of the candy eyes, and attach them to the top of the apple.
Notes
APPLES. We think this recipe is adorable with green apples, but any variety of apples will work.
PEANUT BUTTER. Creamy peanut butter tends to spread easier than chunky but use whatever peanut butter you prefer. You can use other nut butters or seed butter if needed.
MAKE AHEAD. This healthy treat is best to eat after you make them, but we’ve enjoyed them the next day with only minimal browning—which only added to the spookiness!
See the post for substitutions for allergies.
Note: Cover the cut portion of your apple with lemon juice if you're worried that it may become brown before eating. We find the peanut butter does a great job on its own, though.Nutritional information is approximate and was calculated using a recipe nutrition label generator and will vary based on cooking methods and brands of ingredients used.
