Ingredient Notes
You'll need 4-simple pantry staples to make your toffee bark candy.
- SALTINE CRACKERS - these simple salty crackers form the base of your toffee. They complement the other sweet ingredients perfectly.
- BUTTER - Because this recipe is made of mostly butter, using high-quality butter yields the perfect flavor. We generally use salted butter, but unsalted would be okay in the recipe as well.
- BROWN SUGAR - The brown sugar gives the recipe its nice caramel flavor. We like to use dark brown sugar, but you'll get a similar flavor using light brown sugar.
- CHOCOLATE MORSELS - chocolate forms a nice sweet layer over the toffee and crackers. Semi-sweet morsels, milk chocolate, dark chocolate morsels, or even white chocolate are good for this Valentine's Day Treat recipe.
And, of course, you need some festive pink sprinkles or Valentine's Day candy to top it off!

This Valentine's Day Candy Recipe is so simple.
Prep: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 1 - Create a Cracker Layer: Create one layer of saltine crackers on your prepared baking pan. Push the crackers tightly together so your caramel has a good base to go on.
Tip: If using parchment, make sure your paper extends past your crackers.
Depending on the size of your pan, you'll use about one sleeve of crackers.
Step 2 - Make Toffee Layer: Combine the sugar and butter in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil for 3 minutes until it thickens and becomes caramel-like. (A teeny bit longer if at higher elevations.)
This mixture creates that yummy buttery toffee!
Step 3 - Spread Toffee on Crackers: Immediately after it's done boiling, spread your toffee on the Saltines with a spatula, evenly coating all the crackers.
Step 4 - Bake and Add Chocolate: Then, place in a 400-degree Fahrenheit oven for 5-6 minutes until the toffee layer is bubbly and golden. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a minute to soften.
Step 5 - Decorate: When the chocolate is slightly set, sprinkle your pink, red, and white candies and other Valentine's Day treats over the top!
Cool, then break into small or medium-sized pieces and enjoy!! Or package the Valentine's Day saltine toffee in decorative containers or bags for a sweet and festive treat.
Reader Tip: Add a few crushed pretzels while adding the candy for a little salty flavor.

Can it be frozen or not? One place in the recipe says "we don’t recommend freezing Saltine Toffee since the crackers tend to get soggy when it’s thawed out" and another says, "Saltine Toffee can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or stored in the freezer for 2-3 months."
Erin Henry
Good catch, Patience. The truth is most people don't like the texture of the candy after it's frozen and thawed, so we don't recommend it. However, we have frozen it, and the kids liked it 🙂
